Amateur Space Radio
-
I doubt many people even in the space activist community,
much less outside of it, realize the extent of involvment of amateur radio
enthusiasts with space. They were pioneers in the small, cheap satellite
revolution with the development and orbiting of over 30 amateur radio satellites
(over 20 still active) since the 1960's. Ham radio operators routinely
communicate with astronauts on MIR and the shuttles.

Space Tethers
Space tethers are just too useful to abandon because
of a couple of high profile failures. There have in fact been several successful
tether tests."Over the last 3 years, NASA successfully deployed three SEDS
Class (Small Expendable Deployer System) probes: SEDS-1 and -2 were 20
km missions and PMG (Plasma Motor Generator) was a 500 m mission."

Astrophysics and Space Science
Note: The Astrophysics and Space Science communities,
unlike high energy physics, have very open and well organized systems for
sharing data, and even experiments, with outside users. (In fact, NASA
requires that all data be made generally available one year after it is
taken.) See some of these links to see how one can obtain data and analysis
programs, propose experiments and observations, etc.
